    Cinema Pasifika Va Tapuia

    Season 1 , Episode 1
    In this first episode from Samoa, Va Tapuia (Sacred Spaces), Taro planter Lui’s grief for his dead wife has infected his whole life. A chance meeting with a stranger, a widow bound in anger to the grave of her husband now drowning in their cyclone devastated village, inspires Lui to reach out to her. This releases him from his own pain and allows his wife to rest. In the accompanying short interview Director, Tusi Tamasese, says he wanted his short film to explore the effects of loss on different people – in this case, someone who has lost a loved one and another who has lost a person she detested but cannot seem to escape from.

    Cinema Pasifika Hans Up! Buai O Laip Bilong Yu! (Hands Up! Your Betel Nut or Your Life!)

    In this second episode from Papua New Guinea, “Hands Up! Your Betel Nut or Your Life!” a pair of inept raskols (criminals) from Port Moresby have a run in with a local buai (betel nut) seller. In the accompanying interview co-writer and producer, Emmanuel Narokobi, talks about his experiences making this hilarious short film and his serious dreams for reviving the narrative film and television industry in Papua New Guinea.

    Season 1 , Episode 3
    In this third episode from the Marshall Islands, “Zori” a young boy called Labro is anxious for his Grandmother to buy him an ice-cream. When she orders him to clean up the garbage first he realizes that one of his flip flops (zoris) is missing. The angry old woman gives him an ultimatum not to come back until he has zoris on both of his feet. So Labro begins his quest under the hot sun to clean up 'everywhere' and to find his lost zori. In his accompanying interview Jack Niedenthal from Microwave Films talks about the joys and challenges of making films in the Marshall Islands.

    This episode features "Envy", an alien horror film by Clarence Dass and Meli Tuqota from Noob Productions in Suva. In their accompanying interview Clarence and Meli talk about their fascination with zombies, horror and the art of cinematic suspense. While Clarence is most well-known in Fiji for making award-winning documentaries on serious issues such as climate change, he longs for the day when they can get the funding to make feature-length horror films.

    Esther is a teenager living in a village in Simbu Province. She begins to drift apart from her family when her friendship with Jimmy, a boy working at the supermarket, develops into something more. After hearing that another one of his girlfriends is HIV positive she worries that she might also have the virus. This thoughtful and challenging production was made by the students from the Centre for Social Communications and Media in Goroka, Papua New Guinea.

    We know the problem. More Australians are fat and they're getting fatter. What no one can agree on is how to stop an epidemic that's threatening to make the next generation less healthy than the one before. Everyone agrees that one part of the answer is to exercise more. What's less clear is how people can be encouraged to eat a healthier diet. On one side, public health advocates say food companies must reduce the levels of fat, salt and sugar they put in their products. On the other side, many believe diet is a personal responsibility way beyond Government regulation.

As she tells the story of this couple and their twins, she also takes us inside an industry that has grown with little effective regulation, leaving it exposed to unscrupulous agents.
